Hip and Knee connect session

On the 2nd February 13:00 - 14:30 NHS Horizons hosted a connect session on supporting people waiting for hip & knee replacement operations. During the session the audience were split into two breakout rooms and uploaded their top four ideas to the platform.

Here are some of the ideas which weren't uploaded to the site following the session.

Breakout Room 1:

  • Pre-hab but integrating into local community such as working in a garden or volunteering (not everyone likes gyms or exercise at home!)
  • Utilise hip and knee champions to help drive the narrative in a way that is relatable to OA suffers as opposed to Physio
  • Reach out to local community groups to being a wider understanding of MSK Health for both people while waiting but also in general to improve it.
  • Sharing community groups that people can access exercise and support - local walking groups
  • Sharing basic pre-hab exercises in video form/rather than just sheets so that it is easier to see how things are being done, especially for those who might not be seeing physios face to face
  • Education and exercise, keeping well while you wait
  • Utilising national resources for ‘lived experience’ then there is more opportunity to engage with a patient who has same condition as you ? vesus Arthritis - local charities. ARthritis action
  • “Parkwalk” instead of parkrun for people with hip and knee OA
  • Fitbit data
  • Goal setting and what is a persons specific goal - they are more likely to focus on something and do it if it means something
  • Goal measurement app
  • How to get info out for those without digital resources
  • Letters need to make sense and be worded with patients in mind and in co-production with them
  • Way to revisit patients along the wait - and to see if they need more/different help

Breakout Room 2:

  • Utilising Apps, Hospital letters, GP letters, Emails to signpost to relevant agencies to help patients self-manage.
  • MDT approach, inc. Outside agencies in one visit.
  • Nationwide toolkit and pathways
  • Chronic pain involvement

I agree these look like great ideas. Many of them correspond with the findings from my NIHR-funded PhD research, which is focused on developing a ‘Virtual Knee School’ website for patients waiting for total knee replacement surgery.

The first stage of my research involved developing recommendations on pre-operative total knee replacement care. We developed the recommendations using a series of questionnaires completed by patients and professionals. The recommendations cover education, exercise and other pre-operative treatments. Examples of the recommendations include providing education on goal setting, and delivering education and exercise programmes using more than one format.

The recommendations are available in Additional File 8 of the publication at:

This is great and something which I am passionate about. I have created a book which focuses on most of the ideas mentioned. The book is called 'The Way to Walk' which gives individuals an understanding of how their bodies works when walking as well as giving them exercises to improve the strength when doing this whole-body activity so when they put it together, they can walk and strengthen at the same time. https://r3physiotherapy.com/wp-content/upload...-Oct-2020-2.pdf
Please let me know what you think.
