Automating routine clinical conversations with Dora

At Ufonia we are a small team of doctors, developers and engineers who are working hard to improve system efficiency so that patients, administrators and clinicians can all benefit. We aim to do this by releasing clinicians from repetitive activities in high volume and low complexity pathways, so they can spend time caring for patients directly.

The solution we have developed is Dora, the UK's first UKCA marked automated clinical assistant. Dora is driven by artificial intelligence and natural language processing. This simply means that Dora is able to call you at any time, anywhere and conduct routine clinical conversations, just as you would have had with a human clinician. Dora is sent a list of people to call, calls you on your telephone and then a letter is sent back to the clinical team outlining what happened. No additional training is required for patients or clinicians.

We have successfully deployed live across multiple NHS sites and are developing a strong evidence base through our NIHR trials. Our first trial showed high levels of patient acceptability. One of the ways we measure this is by collecting a net promoter score out of 10 after every conversation asking the question “On a scale of 1 to 10, how likely would you be to recommend this automated service to a friend or colleague” with patients giving it a mean score of 9/10.

Our first use case is cataract surgery. Patients who had elective cataract surgery in NHS Trusts were given the option to have an automated telephone call with Dora instead. This saved them time coming into hospital and having to speak to a clinician face to face at sites where this still happens.
