Wheelchair Skills

In our service we offer wheelchair skills as an intervention which encourages the child's independence and choice. The training is given when they are issued with their wheelchair.

Before we had to wait for a once a year from whizz kids which was good but now the children are seen and a block of upto 4-6 sessions working on developing the child's independence and choice. The wait list went from a year now to when they get a chair they can be seen by a Physiotherapy Assistant.

The block of physio we offered worked on the skills at school and was patient centred throughout. We also have a guide out to schools and families to help them.

We've had great feedback from families already a year later saying how the training has been great they can now relax and the child goes into school Independently.

We have made some outcome measures which help tailor the training and in 2020 This project won overall at the Advancing Heathcare Awards.

We produced a journal article which is in the JCN on the project.

This is a great idea Gemma. It increases productivity, workforce opportunities as well as the experience of people receiving care! Can you share a link to the journal article too as I think this will give additional insight. Also do you have any quotes from those who have used the service too?

This is fantastic Gemma - love the fact that the philosophy of this work is improvement and independence for children and added bonus that waiting lists have been cut drastically too

I noticed you have a podcast about the work which others on the platform might like to listen to...im a podcast fan! https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/making-...i=1000547403572
