Values-based recruitment

Potential to scale up
Supporting idea or principle

Values-based recruitment helps in recruiting the right people (better for the organisation and better for the employee). Whilst some roles require specific qualifications, some harder to fill vacancies can ask for unnecessary qualifications detering the right people from applying or meaning they are sifted out without an interview. Our team values are included in job advertisements and are taken into account throughout the recruitment process. Not only does this encourage the right candidates, but also increases the chances of retention by employing people who experience greater job satisfaction by working in a role which reflects their own values.

Hi Ann, that's a great idea. Having the right values is so important - a candidate could have all the relevant qualifications and more, but it's the right values that help make an individual an asset to a team. I'm interested to hear more about how your team values are included in job advertisements - do you have any examples you're able to share, please?

Hi Leigh, I don't have an example of an advert I can share with you at the moment but our team values are: Be brave and determined, Be open and honest, Have fun and be happy in our work, and Be kind, caring and compassionate. I would suggest that an advert could include your team values and a simple comment to say that the candidates supporting statement would ideally include some values-based evidence. We have devised values-based questions to ask at interview, for example, for Be brave and determined: Tell me about a time when you were asked to do something that you didn’t agree with and what did you do? Give an example of a time when you have had to take on multiple points of view in making a decision. Give me an example of when you had to make a difficult decision. How did you go about this? What did you learn? It's quite a simple adjustment to how we recruit but can make a world of difference in selecting the right candidate. I hope this helps.
