Defined career pathways for administrative NHS roles

One of the best ways to attract people to careers in
administration and clerical areas within the NHS is to provide clear and
defined career pathways. Reflecting on my 20-year career in the NHS, I've
noticed a significant gap in career guidance and support for administrative and
clerical staff. At no point in my career has anyone asked what I want to
achieve in 3-5 years or provided clear options for advancement. This could include:

  1. Develop
    and Communicate Career Pathways:

    • Clearly
outline potential career pathways within the NHS for administrative and
      clerical roles.

    • Include
detailed information on the qualifications and skills needed for
advancement (e.g., PRINCE2 for project management, management
      qualifications/degrees for entering management).

    • Provide
real-life examples of successful career trajectories within the NHS to
      inspire new entrants.

  2. Regular
    Career Development Discussions:

    • Implement
regular check-ins where employees can discuss their career aspirations
and receive guidance on how to achieve their goals.

    • Encourage
managers to take an active role in mentoring and supporting their staff’s
      professional development.

  3. Training
    and Development Opportunities:

    • Offer
a wide range of training programmes and qualifications tailored to
      administrative and clerical staff.

    • Promote
apprenticeships and other training programmes specifically designed for
administration roles, ensuring staff are aware of these opportunities and
      how to access them.

  4. Visibility
    of Career Support:

    • Make
information about career pathways and development opportunities easily
      accessible to all staff.

    • Utilise
internal communication channels, such as newsletters and intranets, to
regularly highlight career development resources and success stories.

Hi Emily, thank you for joining in the conversation and sharing your idea. Clearly defined career pathways are definitely key to attracting staff. What are other people's thoughts - is there anything you would add to the points Emily has shared? Have you had similar experiences, or do you have examples of a career development pathway to share?

Hello Emily, it's so good to hear admin roles and career progression being championed when they're so vital in the NHS team! I agree that being able to see where a career can go is important so that there is a sense of direction and possibility. Thank you for your thoughts.
