Using digital to support patients pre and post-op while gathering insights to improve outcomes.
Huma and Smith & Nephew have been developing a tool to assist patient pathway management in Orthopedics since 2018. The solution consists of a patient-facing app and a web-based portal for HCPs. It has been launched in an initial private pilot during 2020 and is now in progress to scale across NHS sites.
Patients engage with the app to
- Access timed content on physiotherapy, mental health, diet and general surgery questions
- Fill in patient-reported outcomes questionnaires (EQ5D, OKS, OHS and more)
- Track activity, weight, symptoms and temperature (last optional)
HCPs engage with the portal to:
- View individual patient progress, compliance and entered information
- Schedule and conduct virtual telemedicine appointments
- Sort patients according to red-amber-green metrics
- Send one-way messages to patients (optional)
The solution has been tested amongst the elderly with positive feedback on user experience and ease of use. It's highly configurable, with the option to tailor most parts to the individual site cohort and preferences of each surgeon. Huma acquired a mental health business in 2020 and have included content to help manage pain and stress in the solution. The solution also has a host of physiotherapy videos that can be delivered on a timed basis per the site's program.
We're particularly keen to improve patient QOL whilst providing insights and improving access to the many patients waiting for their operation. Some sites we are in progress to launch will also be using the information to sort their waiting list and collect patient updates automatically (rather than via post). We want to work closely with local sites to further tailor the solution with access to relevant resources and site information so that patients are as informed as possible.
Huma has been working with the NHS for over ten years, including a large pro-bono COVID-19 rollout to support sites establish virtual wards. As we move to tackle even more extensive issues, we're here to help!

this looks so good- i currently lead a Patient group which consists of quite an aging population - be interesting to know how the older generation are learing to work with the technology as I'm sure much to learn
